Why eco-apartments?

When restoring the old estate, part of which dates back to the 16th century, the main idea was to bring the original structure back to life. During the final decades of the last century it was used to shelter animals and as a wine cellar.

Partitions were removed, passages discovered and the old floors were reinforced.

The restoration work was inspired by wabi-sabi philosophy and architecture. Where possible, the layer of lichen and mould, which had formed on the exterior over time, was left in place.

The roof was almost completely rebuilt using the original tiles and slates. It is comprised of chestnut beams and terracotta tiles, with full insulation and ventilation.

The interior walls were plastered with Roman lime, and painted with coloured lime in natural earth tones.
The floor was tiled with handcrafted terracotta tiles.

The heating and air conditioning system uses radiating panels and runs on geothermic energy. This is a clean, renewable and eco-friendly energy source.

The old cement vats in the wine cellar were buried and are now used to store rainwater. This water is used to water the garden and supply drainage water to the main building.
